Mammography
Mammography is a specific type of imaging that uses a low-dose x-ray system to examine breasts. A mammography exam, called a mammogram, is used to aid in the diagnosis of breast diseases in women.
A mammogram requires a small amount of radiation and a moderate amout of compression pressure on the breast to penetrate the tissue and allow an adequate evaluation of the breast for abnormalities. The image is analyzed by computer-assisted detection software and evaluated by a radiologist prior to reporting results to you and your doctor.
Although not a perfect test, mammography currently is the best diagnostic test for screening for breast cancer. Screening mammograms do not require a physician's order and frequently can be performed on a "walk-in" basis at NRG.
